Mauricio Alanis

California IT Supervisor

Mauricio Alanis was born in the beautiful coastal state of Nayarit, Mexico, but considers himself a Los Angeles native. He began his career as a kid, taking apart and fixing clocks, TVs, and radios, as well as reading medical texts and science textbooks. After attending Don Bosco Technical Institute, a private technical high school in the San Gabriel Valley where he received supplemental education in electronics, RF, computers and programming, he went on to USC (Fight On!) and majored in biomedical and electrical engineering (with a minor in neuroscience).

Mauricio has worked in IT for more than 10 years. Prior to Marketplace, he was a network engineer at SmartJog s.A., a France Telecom spinoff company serving high-profile entertainment industry clients throughout the world. Before that, he served as a network administrator and PHP developer at a San Fernando Valley ISP, a graphic designer's assistant, Spanish translator, nightclub DJ, and Internet director at USC's student radio station KSCR (where he also hosted a radio show for five years). It was here that he was first exposed to broadcasting, but Mauricio is no stranger to the magic of radio, since he'd already been speaking to people around the world as an amateur radio operator (call sign KD6EQO).

Despite the his chosen profession, Mauricio doesn't consider himself a true IT "nerd." In his spare time, he enjoys fixed-gear cycling, drawing, photography, reading, flying, shopping for clothes, listening to (and making) electronic music, and going to clubs. He is owned by several mischievous rescue cats and loves German automobiles, stinky French cheeses and espresso.

Mauricio joined Marketplace in April 2004.
