Melissa Kaplan | Overnight Web Producer
Melissa Kaplan is used to keeping weird hours. Perhaps it wasn't wise of her parents to get her into coffee at the age of 12, but when your shift starts at 1:30 a.m. caffeine can sometimes take the place of sunlight. With enough of a brew going she'll manage to post the Marketplace Morning Report, update blogs and maintain general order on the site as a crucial line of defense against typos, audio glitches and all other foes of technology.
Melissa began her journey into journalism at the age of 7, with a fur-lined diary and pens that would break more than work. At Emerson College in Boston she nixed the ink for a functional QWERTY keyboard, unholy experiments with HTML and a dual Bachelor's Degree in Writing, Literature and Publishing and Audio/Radio. After working for The Boston Globe and other publications around the city, she decided to trade the bad New England winters for the endless desert summers out west. She moved to Los Angeles and joined the web staff at Marketplace in 2006.
When not making headlines and obsessing over the Dow, Melissa makes beautiful music around town with her band, The Hard To Get. She's toured the U.S. and Europe as a professional guitarist and singer. She also enjoys playing violin, yoga and disciplining Monkey, her disobedient cat.
