Stacey Vanek-Smith

Stacey Vanek Smith grew up in Idaho. After high school, she went east and graduated from Princeton University with a degree in comparative literature and creative writing.

After college, Stacey moved to Paris, where she earned a Masters degree in French Cultural Studies from Columbia University and developed a love of history, architecture and pastries. While in Paris, Stacey started working in journalism, serving as the arts editor for a city magazine and freelancing for Time Magazine.

After two years in Paris, Stacey returned to the U.S. and worked as a freelance reporter and editor in Idaho for a year. She then moved to New York, where she earned her Masters from Columbia's Journalism School. It was during her time at Columbia that Stacey started learning radio. She decided to go into the field the first time she recorded the sound of a cappuccino being made.

Stacey was hired by Marketplace in 2003 and has been a producer, editor, reporter and host.

Stacey lives in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and spends most of her free time hiking, cooking, watching reality TV and sampling the city's restaurants.
