The Myth of the Hybrid?

The Toyota Prius HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive)

Hybrid cars can mean fewer trips to the gas station. But the sticker price can siphon money from your wallet. Marketplace's Alisa Roth reports.

A Japanese newspaper reported this week that Honda is getting ready to release a hybrid version of its subcompact car. The company's not commenting. But if it's true, the news represents a growing trend: more and more car companies are coming out with hybrid models of their most popular cars-from sub-compacts to SUVs. The question, though, is should we care? Do hybrids save us enough in gas and emissions to make them worth the extra cost? (William Thomas Cain / Getty)
