Work life: Showing you the door

Washington, D.C. Doorman Stephen Blum

He may not be a member of any government office in Washington, D.C., but rest assured, he can certainly... open a lot of doors.

Stephen Blum in front of the historic Willard Hotel, where he's worked for 21 years. "In my very first year as a doorman --- and I never did it again --- I accidentally shut a door on a woman's fingers," he recalls. "I hold open the front door of a cab, now, until everybody's in. And if they try to shut it, I won't let them." (Judith Ritter)
