I believe that Terrry Mammenga is 1/2 right -- the employer AND the employee both pay into unemployment insurance (the employee portion is automatically withheld from wages, which may cause it to appear as though the employer is paying the whole thing). The self-employed have it the toughest -- they pay twice -- both as employer and as employee!

Lis Pulliam Weston is so wrong! Employees do not pay any portion of state or federal unemployment insurance. As an employer It makes me very angry that an "expert" goes on the radio and gives advice when she seems to know very little about how the system works. This needs to be corrected on your next show. Employers pay unemployment insurance, not the employees and it costs the employer every time an employee claims. Why wouldn't Ms. Weston suggest the employees go out and look for an other job?
