A slew of glitches for iPhone
From weak or inconsistent signals to dropped calls and poor battery life, Apple has been dealing with a bunch of problems since rolling out its latest iPhone. Jeff Tyler reports why it needs to work these out fast.

Bob Moon: Apple is getting ready to kick off the next phase of the launch of its new iPhone 3G. Consumers in more than 20 countries from India to Argentina will get a chance to buy the new gadget starting tomorrow. The company will no doubt be offering more reliable Web connections, and making its case for how its products are so much easier to use. But it turns out Apple has been struggling to fix glitches from its initial roll-out of its new iPhone version here in the U.S. Marketplace's Jeff Tyler has more.
Jeff Tyler: Despite the company's reputation for reliable, easy-to-use technology, Apple's latest iPhone has generated a number of complaints.
Ken Wilbur: Weak or inconsistent signals, dropped calls, reports of poor battery life.
That's USC marketing professor Ken Wilbur. Apple has released two software patches, though he says it's unclear if these will fix all the problems. Wilbur says reports of lost e-mails and other malfunctions invite unflattering comparisons.
Wilbur: You know, you hate to compare Apple to Microsoft, but after they've been hammering Microsoft on Vista problems for months in their advertising, Apple's got some problems of their own.
Apple needs to fix those bugs quickly in order to fend off competitors. T-Mobile is expected to release a new phone powered by Google software sometime before Christmas.

My boyfriend and I have had our 3Gs for about a month. He upgraded from a 1st generation iPhone; I upgraded from a non-iPhone, but was already with AT&T. I have experienced 10's of dropped calls, greatly reduced (and inconsistent) signal strength, and several freeze-ups on my iPhone. My old phone never dropped my calls, and my signal strength was much stronger. I love my iPhone, and Apple in general, regardless of these glitches, but they do diminish the impressiveness of this revolutionary technology. And, of course, they can be really annoying. Oh, yeah - and we both just bought car chargers because sometimes it's hard to make it through a day on a single battery charge. ;-(

Wow. You mean Apple CAN'T guarantee 100% flawless functionality from an electronic device that relies on a second-rate wireless network? Oh, the HUMANITY! Seriously, Bryce. HTC Touch Pro?? A Windows-based device?? Keep dreaming, bro.
I'm with iJah on this one. I'm a first-generation iPhone user, recently upgraded, and I consider myself a "knowledgeable power user"; I haven't had so much as a single lockup, glitch, dropped call, or reset on either of my iPhones in over a year of use. The fact is, the rest of the market is so utterly devastated by Apple's phenomenal innovation with respect to the iphone, that they are practically wetting their pants to call out every glitch or bug the second one is mentioned. But if you put the iPhone's failure rate up against any of its competitors in any metric -dropped calls, latency, resets, OS crashes, or otherwise- I'll bet you a phone of your choice that the iPhone has a better performance record than any competing device per capita. Bar NONE.

my favorite is watching my boss walk all over the office, just to hear who he is talking to. i have a htc touch phone on sprint, and i can call in the elevator of the sears tower. but for those who want to look important and smart, there is the iphone. for those people who know about computers or are actually smart and not afraid of technology, enjoy anything but apple.

The fact that the iPhone is buggy has been widely recognized. If you pay attention to which "WHINING, SPOILED, BABIES" are most critical of it, you'll notice that the most knowledgable power-users are heavily represented -- first-time smartphone users who don't know what they're missing are not.
Just because you like your new luxury item doesn't mean that it's a high-quality product.
Everyone else (e.g. professionals): stay posted for the HTC Touch Pro, due before the end of this year.
