As per the above comment (not isolated), I am concerned that people are still thinking, "get through this rough patch and back to where we were." I don't see macroeconomic planning for a slower growth economy that does not consume as much.

I resolved not to buy anything new in 2009, except food, medicine, and underwear. The net result, I hope, will be three-fold: for me, more savings in the bank; for Mother Earth, less impact from manufacturing, packaging, and shipping; and in some tiny, tiny way for society, less hoarding of "stuff" of which we all have way too much, much more than we need. Already I am noticing how much more mindful I am even in Costco buying groceries: "Not buying that book, not buying that magazine, not looking at that clothing."
My friend has joined me in this resolution, and we are allowed to buy used goods, i.e. from garage sales or thrift stores, which suits my asthetic just fine. There is simply too much wanton excess in this country. It is the root of many of our collective problems, from foreclosures to global warming.
