From the Marshall Plan to rebuilding the East
MARKETPLACE is spending a week reporting on the economic developments in Germany.
Today, amid financial crisis, Europe is struggling to integrate its Eastern half. Fifty years ago, Western Europe was rescued from the devastation of World War II by the American Marshall Plan. MARKETPLACE is spending the Marshall Plan anniversary week (June 2 to June 6) broadcasting live from Berlin on new and old economic developments in Germany and Europe. Originating the daily 30-minute program from Berlin is particularly appropriate because the unification of Germany seemingly fulfilled Marshall's vision for post-war peace and freedom.
The photo on the right shows U.S. Secretary of State, George C. Marshall.In partnership with the German radio station Berliner Rundfunk 91,4 the MARKETPLACE staff will transmit live to 284 stations throughout the United States and via the America One satellite to over 20 European cities including Berlin.
Among those appearing on the MARKETPLACE Berlin week special will be:
MARKETPLACE host David Brancaccio will sit down with a middle-class German family to learn how typical Germans spend a household budget. He'll meet with a German accountant to hear how taxes eat up a standard paycheck. And he'll chat with stand-up comedian Gayle Tufts to find out what makes Germans laugh and makes others laugh at and about Germans. MARKETPLACE will bring it's own unique perspective to this important story.
- Friedrich W. Menzel, CITIBANK's board member;
- Norbert Walter, chief economist at Deutsche Bank;
- Peter Schneider, author of the book "The Wall Jumper".
The special Berlin Week broadcast is made possible through the generous support of German Marshall Fund of the United States and the RIAS Berlin Kommission.
