Why Cuba?
|
We
wanted to learn about the good, bad, and the ugly of globalization on the middle
of Middle America. Using population distribution, the Census puts the middle of
the middle in a meadow outside of Cuba, Missouri, a town of less than 3,000 along
old Route 66. So we picked up the show and sent David Brancaccio to broadcast
from Voss' Truckport - meeting place for thousands of truckers who crisscross
the country every day. During the week, Cuba's residents and business owners describe
how they are affected by the arrival of international trade partners. We tour
Cuba, where the only Castro we found was a Castro Convertible at a used furniture
place called, "ABC Investments." In making this journey from Los Angeles to the
middle of America, we hope to explore the concept that "all globalism is local."
Or, as David says, if the election cracks the country in half as warned, he'll
be there at the fissure to get sound.
