Doing Business in an LDS World
Text | RealAudio
Marketplace is broadcasting live from Salt Lake City, so we take a look at what it's like doing business in Mormon-dominated Utah. As more and more businesses relocate to the Southwest, how much of an advantage is it to be affiliated with the Church of Latter-Day Saints? What can arriving companies expect? Marketplace's Bob Moon reports.

Utah Tech
Text | RealAudio
Utah's governor has ambitious plans to get the Beehive State buzzing as a technology powerhouse. But experts and insiders see some challenges. While virtually every corner of the state should soon be wired with high-speed Internet connections, Utah may have trouble plugging into some key resources. From the Marketplace Technology Desk, Bob Moon reports.

Utah Hi-Tech
RealAudio
Did you know that the most computer-saturated state isn’t California, with Silicon Valley, or Massachusetts, with all of its Ivory Towers. Actually, there are more computers per capita in UTAH than any other state. 66 percent, or TWO in THREE Utah households have a computer – slightly ahead of Alaska, which ranks number 2. And Salt Lake City recently edged out San Francisco as the most computer-using CITY in the nation. So it’s probably not surprising that Utah ranks pretty high for people who know how to USE computers. The state stands 13th in the nation for college and graduate degrees, 11th in civilian scientists and engineers, and 5th in classrooms wired for the Internet and teachers trained to use it.

Utah’s home to a host of prominent high-tech firms, including Iomega and Novell. In the late 1990’s, the American Electronics Association ranked the area around Salt Lake City as one of the fastest-growing markets in the country for hi-tech employment. Utah’s also home to one of the most popular Web sites on the planet: the Mormon Church’s geneological FamilySearch.org, with 650 million names and counting. It averages 7 to 9 million hits a day, and it’s capable of handling 45 million visitors without crashing and burning. This makes it one of the most-frequented destinations on the World Wide Web, worldwide.

I’m Mitchell Hartman for Marketplace.

Haiku Tunnel
An independent feature film by the Kornbluth brothers...
What are the chances that someone with NO connections in Hollywood can make an independent feature film, get it accepted at a major international film festival, and see it land in theatres for nationwide release? Meet the Kornbluth brothers, Josh and Jacob. Their movie, Haiku Tunnel, is a film based on an acclaimed one-man show by Josh. As the film will be featured at next week's Sundance Film Festival, Josh is in Salt Lake City, and will be visiting the show during our Utah visit. In turn, we'll follow the film's progress at Sundance (go to http://www.marketplace.org/features/slc/haiku.html for pictures and audio reports)...starting Monday, Jaunary 22!
