Small Town Hall
We keep hearing that the money we spend now and the decisions we make could place a huge burden on our children. But we rarely ask them what they think. So we convened a “Small Town Hall.” Marketplace's Scott Jagow sat down with a few kids to listen to their ideas about money, the economy and the future.
-
Should kids be allowed to have credit cards?
-
Do kids even know what a recession is?
-
What is the deficit?
-
Has the recession changed their dreams?
-
What do they think about debt?
-
Any investing advice?
-
What about saving money?
The Kids
Natalie Colon, Alec English, Cayley Frank, William Hunter, Luke Klosterman, Soren Muniz-Pedersen, Jessie Sabree, Montana Yao
The Adults
Scott Jagow, Eric Johnson, Dalasie Michaelis, Brendan Francis Newnam
Special Thanks
Vahan Baladouni, Collin Mitchell

I really wish that I would have had some talks like this growing up. I am turning 21 soon and I am in debt up to my ears. These children are remarkable and a great deal smarter than I am or was at that time. It would be interesting to see if little William Hunter did end up coming out with energy efficient cars.

These kids show an awareness that other kids and adults need to have. I think a case study on them should be done regarding their home life, education, etc. to acertain how they arrived at their understandings. Phenomenal.

Question asked by Shel Anderson
From Durham, NC, : What social class are these kids from?
Answer: As a matter of fact, I know three of these kids in the video and they come from hard working families.

@A Crabtree: Now problems here. Maybe you had something else open or more than one playing at a time?

Remember the Scholastic News poll that predicts the presidential winner every primary?
this story made me think of them... they absorb so much information, especially from home.

Just a small thing - I really wish you hadn't played loud music over the kids discussing the recession on today's Marketplace. It was distracting, I couldn't hear what they were saying, and I wanted to.
