Layoffs, with John Challenger
March 3, 2001
These are not happy days for many American workers. In the face of an economic slowdown, large corporations are laying off thousands of workers. In recent weeks Dell Computers announced that it was axing 1700 jobs, while Motorola is eliminating 4,000 jobs. And the future is likely to bring more bad news. On this edition of Sound Money, host Chris Farrell explores the current spate of layoffs with John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, one of this country's largest outplacement companies. What's happening? Why? Farrell will also talk about the emotional side of dealing with a layoff with career counselor Amy Lindgren. Financial educator Ruth Hayden will offer a checklist for financial survival in the event of a layoff, and we'll go to Austin, Texas, to see how recently laid-off workers are coping.

Inheritance Preparation, with with Carol Akright
March 31, 2001
Money is a topic that is difficult to bring up under any circumstance. When it's an issue between parents and their adult children, it is especially painful. Yet according to Carol Akright, such a conversation is essential. Heirs need to know their parents' estate plans. Parents need to share as much information as possible with their heirs. Whether it's a family business or family values that are being passed on, the transition needs to be planned. Akright is the author of Funding Your Dreams Generation to Generation (Dearborn, 2001), and she'll take calls about inheritance preparation on this edition of Sound Money.
