William J. Pulte is founder and chairman of the Board of Directors of Pulte Homes, Inc., the nation's largest homebuilder by revenue. The company is also the most diverse national builder, building for the first-time, move-up, second move-up, and active adult markets. Pulte Homes operates in 53 markets and 27 states.
In the summer of 1950, following his graduation from De La Salle High School in the Detroit area, Bill Pulte built his first house. The five-room bungalow located near Detroit City Airport featured a fireplace, seldom found in bungalows of the day, and sold for $10,000 even before its completion. The second home Mr. Pulte built was for his parents, William and Marguerite Pulte, who had never before owned their own home.
Six years later he incorporated his business, then known as William J. Pulte, Inc. In 1960, Mr. Pulte built his first subdivision, which included a total of 49 lots. In the mid-1960s he expanded his business, first into the Washington, D.C. area, then into Chicago and Atlanta. As the decade progressed his homebuilding business grew to 12 subdivisions in six states.
In 1969, the Company went public as Pulte Home Corporation with an initial offering of 200,000 shares of common stock. Mr. Pulte remained chairman and president. In 2001, Pulte Corporation changed its name to Pulte Homes, Inc. Pulte Homes delivered 45,630 homes in the U.S. and more than $14.7 billion in homebuilding revenue in 2005. Today, Mr. Pulte remains actively involved in the Company as chairman of the Board.
