Millions of Americans are insured by Health Maintenance Organizations, or HMOs. On June 21, an important decision from the Supreme Court. It says patients who claim their insurers wouldn't pay for recommended medical care cannot sue their HMOs for big malpractice awards.
Millions of state and local government employees--from teachers to police officers to tax collectors--could be facing a threat to their long term health insurance. That's the assessment of many public employee unions.
Wachovia's set to buy Southtrust. A bank deal priced at more than $14 billion. What more is there to say? Just a couple of things: this gives Wachovia a big jump start on the next wave of bank acquisitions, deep in the heart of fast-growing Texas.
Bet you'd never thought you be paying your phone bill to the cable TV company. The Baby Bells are having a tough time with the concept too--and they're prepared to fight over it. If you haven't already been bombarded by competing offers from telephone companies and cable providers, then brace yourself. After today's news, the bid for your loyalty is bound to become even more fierce.
Also in heated competition: Google and Yahoo. Today the latter unveiled a new web site for internet users in China. It's called Yisou, which translates as "number one search".

A rocket-plane called SpaceShip One - a project organized by aviation innovator Burt Rutan - soared above the earth's atmosphere with a civilian at the controls.

Russian Capitalism at Risk?
The Russian Government's long battle with the Yukos oil company took another turn today. The Finance Minister offered what looked like an olive branch. He said the Kremlin did not want to drive Yukos into bankruptcy. Could have fooled a lot of folks. Russia's biggest oil company still faces a multi-billion dollar tax bill.
