  • Most people are saving their fireworks for the holiday this weekend. But the John Kerry campaign is jumping the gun with a display of financial pyrotechnics a little early on this Thursday, July 1st. Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry reported today that his campaign took in $34 million last month. That brings his fundraising total to $180 million so far.
  • When it comes to economic indicators, number-crunchers pore over all kinds of stats--GDP, international trade, the consumer price index. Perhaps they should check in with their local realtor, too. Many companies are moving in to bigger digs to accommodate the new workers they've been hiring. That boosted the office real estate market last quarter according to Reis Incorporated, a commercial real estate firm.
  • One of Hollywood's most powerful leading men can finally retire. As head of the Motion Picture Association of America, Jack Valenti has spent the past four decades working Washington on behalf of the movie biz. Then earlier this year the 82 year old Valenti said he wanted to step down. After a long casting call, the M-P-A-A announced today it's found Valenti's successor.

    Iraqi Combat Stress ... a Reality
    A U.S. Marine was killed in Iraq today during a clash with militants outside the town of Fallujah. That brings to 633 the number of U.S. troops who've been killed since the start of the invasion last year. But the war is also taking a psychological toll on men and women in the armed forces. That's according to a study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine. Some 17 percent of returning soldiers in the survey reported signs of at least one severe mental-health problem.

    Battling Those Blue Laws
    Flash forward to your Independence Day barbecue. You decide you'd like to toast our nation's birthday with something a bit stronger than a beer -- but you haven't planned ahead. In about 20 of these United States - you're out of luck. Because the 4th falls on Sunday, and those states restrict Sunday liquor sales. The liquor lobby's been battling state by state against these "blue laws".
