  • What's in your wallet? Hopefully, a little more green. Turns out that Americans did less shopping last month. On this July 14th, the Commerce Department said retail sales fell by 1.1 percent in June. The most obvious next question is 'why are consumers spending less at the stores?'
  • Not guilty! That's the outcome of a trial of eight current and former drug company employees. They were accused of offering kickbacks to doctors who wrote prescriptions for drugs sold by T-A-P Pharmacuticals. The kickbacks were alleged to be in the form of fees, dinners, and golf trips among other favors. The case had been closely watched by pharmaceutical companies, and by critics who claim freebies drive up the price of prescription drugs.
  • The Dow, the Nasdaq, the S&P 500 all down today. Details when we...hey, wait a minute! That wasn't supposed to happen, was it?

    Forbes, Russia, and Assassination
Word today that Russia's 100 richest citizens may be getting a knock on the door from the local constabulary. Police are investigating last week's murder of the editor of the Russian edition of Forbes magazine. The editor had recently reported that Moscow was home to more billionaires than any city in the world, and he'd compiled a list of the top tier. The editor's murder is just the latest twist in a business drama worthy of Tolstoy or Pushkin. We've all heard about the jailing of oil billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Many wonder whether these events might be related.

The employment picture is not quite that rosy on this end of the Atlantic. But the Brits have embarked on an experiment: to get private companies more involved in public works. They call it the Private Finance Initiative. Before anyone gets overly enthusiastic, it might pay for Americans to take note of what the British are encountering.

Martha, There's a Fox in the TV Henhouse ...
Today, the Fox Networks group announced plans to launch a new cable TV channel devoted entirely to -- reality shows. Given what's been going on behind the scenes in the TV industry this week, Fox's move almost seems like a cheeky jab at its network rivals. They've been noisily accusing Fox of stealing their ideas for reality shows. Fox has been mum on the allegations...except to say it's launching a Reality Channel.
