  • One event - or two. That'll be the question for a jury next month considering whether insurance companies for the World Trade Center are responsible for paying out claims for each tower. On this Friday, September 17th, a similar issue is now cropping up in Florida where Hurricanes Charley and Frances both wiped out parts of the state's midsection. Insurance companies say that's two separate events and want to charge homeowners a double deductible on the damage.
  • Today a Japanese government board ordered Citigroup to cease its private banking operations there. The world's largest financial company has been in a sumo match with Japanese regulators all week -- first blamed for misleading bond clients, and then told it hasn't done enough to prevent money laundering.
  • A quick update to our story yesterday on the closing of a Jaguar factory in England - due to poor sales. Today, Jaguar's parent company - Ford - announced Jaguar will pull out of Formula One racing. Three of the circuit's ten racing teams will be affected. Along the beaches here in Southern California, even the garbage cans and volleyball nets come with advertising. Not much of a surprise that any available surface these days would bear commercial messages. Getting the word out about a new product is more complicated than ever in an age when so many media compete for our attention. "Get your assault rifles while they're hot!"
Earlier this week Congress and the White House allowed a decade-old ban on 19 types of semi-automatic weapons to expire. The law made a variety of gun features illegal, including high-capacity magazines, bayonet mounts, and grenade launchers. Now, some gun manufacturers are gearing up to sell military-style weapons again. One gun control advocate suggested to the Los Angeles Times that the new industry mantra might be "buy your wife a high-capacity magazine for Christmas while you can." But commentator and humorist Tim Bedore warns she'd better not try to use it on a hunting trip.
