Our lead story on this October 5th: a supply and demand problem that could affect the health of millions. The maker of half of the flu vaccine used in the U.S. today had its license pulled by British authorities. As flu season begins, there will be no shipments of vaccine from the Chiron Corporation this year. This, because of problems at Chiron's manufacturing plant in Liverpool...
You know, it must be an election year. What started out as a bill to roll back export tax breaks that violate World Trade rules has morphed into - the omnibus everything act of 2004. The 633 pages include tax breaks for shipping industries, bow-and-arrow manufacturers, native Alaskan whalers, and importers of Chinese ceiling fans. But wait, there's more. If you keep on digging, you'll come across a plan for the government to outsource some of the tax work.
With oil closing at over over $51 a barrel more analysts today jumped on the bandwagon of those who say prices are now speculative. To quote one industry watcher at Oppenheimer, since every other investment vehicle has disappointed, oil is the only game in town. Perhaps that's what Flatt and Scruggs meant by 'bubblin crude.' Oil, that is...

I'm related to Kerry and Bush. Are you?
Some call it the American Myth...others, the American dream. The proposition that everyone in the U.S. succeeds or fails on their own merits. Yet perhaps success has more to do with ancestry than some are willing to concede. Consider this. President George Bush and his challenger, John Kerry have something in common. Both are distantly related to our own Adam Davidson. Something else Bush and Kerry have in common: both are rich and powerful men. Yet Adam squeaks by reporting for public radio. Perhaps, he thought, it might be useful to double-check the genealogical record.

The visa chase
If you want to get a job in this country, and you're not from here, you're probably out of luck--and you're probably going to have to wait a good while. 65,000 visas have just been opened up to admit foreign workers. And each and every one has been snapped up. That's it. All gone. The annual cap for the so-called H1-B visa program was reached on the very first day.

Outsourcing lost at sea?
Some critical numbers come out on Friday: the last monthly unemployment figures before election day. If today's report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas is any indication, the numbers won't be good. The company today said its anecdotal survey showed layoff announcements soared in September--up 41 percent compared to a year ago. Overseas outsourcing gets a lot of the blame. But how do companies know whether it's safe to set up shop in some remote locale?

Baby boomer politics
We're told that tonight's vice presidential debates will be about the candidates defining their differences. One obvious difference: age. Dick Cheney is not a baby boomer. John Edwards is. One could write-off such a difference as irrelevant. Futurist Andrew Zolli has worked out the demographics and he's noticed what seems to be inevitable. Given the age distribution, not only will boomer politicians be running the country for a longer period than many think...Zolli says they'll be affecting economic decisions from pensions to health care -for generations to come.
