Aid battles in Sri Lanka

The first U.S. Marines are delivering aid to southern Sri Lanka. But they won't be offering help to the northeastern areas controlled by the separatist guerrilla movement known as the Tamil Tigers. The U.S. has placed them on the list of banned terrorist organizations. As Miranda Kennedy reports from eastern Sri Lanka, the Tamil Tigers face a new battle - over aid.

Playing economics with China

China's impact on the U.S. economy can't be overstated. A report out this morning says the China factor goes well beyond textiles, as Marketplace's Scott Jagow reports. Meanwhile, while the U.S. and Chinese economies have fueled the global economic growth of the past decade, commentator Robin Bew believes the fun won't last in 2005.

NEWSCAST

From New York: The reshuffling of the Bush economic team continues this week...

From Washington: The insurance company, State Farm, says it will pay $40 million to thousands of car owners in a multi-state settlement. The company was accused of failing to designate on the title whether a car had been totaled in a crash.

From Detroit: Dodge is bringing back a name from the past. The new version of the Charger goes on sale this summer.

From Washington: Let's say your boss promises to pay you and doesn't. Seems an obvious case for a lawsuit. But what if you're in the spy business -- can you sue the CIA?

From Washington: Construction crews at the nation's Capitol building are erecting the platform where George W. Bush will be sworn in for a second term. The inauguration is a week from Thursday.

From Boston: The Government has just released how much the country spent on health care in 2003. It's a huge sum - $1.7 trillion. That equals $5,670 per person.

From Berlin: Recent comments by Treasury Secretary John Snow have had a yo-yo effect on the dollar/euro relationship. Comments last Friday that the U.S. wants a strong dollar pushed the greenback up against the euro.

From Miami: Today the U.S. patent office is announcing its annual top ten list of patent recipients among corporations. For the 12th consecutive year, IBM topped that list with 3,248 patents granted. That's a good 1,300 patents more than number two Matsushita of Japan. So how is Big Blue celebrating?

From Rome: In Italy, the government has just passed one of the toughest anti-smoking laws in Europe. Those who light up in bars, restaurants or offices will face hefty fines... as will businesses that don't enforce the ban. As Megan Williams reports, many Italian bars and restaurants are fuming.
